Seriously, that is the question one needs to ask themselves. Even more importantly, one needs to answer themselves 100% honestly. Internet marketing is just like playing a sport. Since the World Series just ended, my Philadeplphia Phillies are the champions, I’ll use it as a perfect example.
Game 5 was suspended in the bottom of the 6th inning with the score tied. Under the rules Game 5 would resume right where it left off, with 3 1/2 innings left in regulation time. When they finally played those 3 1/2 innings it was a battle. That was without a doubt some of the best baseball ever played. The stratagies that the managers used and the pitchers being rotated in so quickly, it was so exciting to watch. Both teams did whatever they could to win Game 5, never even thinking that it could go in to extra innings. Extra innings – No Way, this game was ending at the end of the 9th inning (the end of the 3 1/2 innings).
What is my point you may ask? Well, if the goal of your website is to produce income then you must play to win. Had either the Tampa Bay Rays or the Phila Phillies played with less competion (playing Not to Lose) then Game 5′s ending would not have been very exciting and possibly different.
What I’m getting at is, in your business you have to do whatever you need to do to reach the goal that you have set. Now I’m talking legally, of course. Just as TV controls professional sports (at least in the USA), Google controls the Internet. Google sets the rules and we, as players, have to play by those rules. When the rules change then we modify our actions to fit the new rules.
Ok, Google has decided the rules that govern page ranking. We as webmasters / publishers have to take the steps that will increase our page rank. Google decides on the level of relevancy your website or page(s) receive based on how Google wants to interpret it. That is it!!! Nothing else matters. Complaining about it is for losers. Evolving what you are doing is a WINNER attitude.
Google is a Player in the Game Too
Google is an extremely wealth company that doesn’t really sell a hard product. They provide a service. They do it very well and because they do it better than any other company they can market advertising to others. If you do what Google wants, it will become a win-win situation. They know the game and how it is played, they are not stupid. Google is concerned with providing relevant search results to the requestor. The more relevant the better. What does that mean for the publisher? Become more relevant, be the expert!!!
How? By doing what Google has determined makes you the expert. In the brick & mortor world having the diploma or PHD makes you an expert but, in the online world Google doesn’t know or see the diploma or PHD title. Google sees relevant backlinks as signs of authority. I’ll say it again, Google sees relevant backlinks as signs of authority. If, X number of external websites contain relevant backlinks to your site then your site must be an authority site on the subject / keyword. Remeber one thing – I stated “relevant backlinks” not junk backlinks. Do more than your competition and you’ll out rank them.
Thats it for now…………
